Using Luma

What Luma does

Luma compares genuine walking routes with available community lighting information. Better Lit is a lighting comparison, not a safety guarantee.

Lighting information and limited data

Lighting information is community supplied and may be incomplete or outdated. “Not enough lighting data” means the area is unknown; it is not automatically treated as poorly lit.

Destination search and navigation

Search for a place or choose a point on the map, compare route time and lighting information, then choose Start. Open More for Run Mode or Campus Mode. End stops navigation; manual map movement pauses follow until you re-centre.

Voice, haptics and screen awake

Voice is optional and depends on the browser and device remaining active. Haptic cues appear only on supported devices. Screen awake is optional and is not guaranteed by every browser.

Location and direction permissions

Location is requested only when a feature needs it. Direction access is requested only after Re-centre, Start journey or an explicit heading-up action. If access is off, open your browser or operating-system site permissions for Luma. Search, map selection and north-up navigation remain available.

Rate lighting or report an issue

Choose the add button when you want to contribute. Lighting ratings and current-condition confirmations need a recent accepted phone-location fix. An issue may still be sent without one, but it waits for review and cannot affect routes until approved. A selected map point identifies the issue location; it does not prove physical presence.

Nearby help

Nearby help lists possible sources of staff or official help. No place is guaranteed safe; check the place and opening status before relying on one.

Offline, privacy and emergency limits

Saved app information may remain available offline, but live maps, search, syncing and sharing can need a connection. Luma does not provide guaranteed background navigation, does not replace emergency services, and does not claim an emergency message is sent unless the device completes that external action.
